What is a dynamic disk Windows 10?

There are two types of disks when referring to storage types in computers: basic disks and dynamic disks. Basic disks are the storage types most often used with Windows. It refers to a disk that contains partitions such as primary partitions and logical drives. Besides, those partitions are usually formatted to be NTFS or FAT32 for file storage.

Dynamic disks provide some features that basic disk do not. For example, it allows you to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes) and fault-tolerant volumes (mirrored and RAID-5 volumes). Besides, they use a database to track information about dynamic volumes on the disk and other dynamic disks on the computer, so it is more flexible for volume management than basic disks.

Why convert dynamic disk to basic one in Windows 10?

Although dynamic disks offer better flexibility for disk management than basic disks, they also have some limitations. First of all, the dynamic disk has many compatibility issues with other services like iSCSI, USB, and Firewire and cannot be read by a number of Windows operating systems. When you try to install Windows 7 Home on a dynamic disk, you may receive the error "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space...".

Cannot Install Windows On Dynamic Disk

That’s because dynamic disks are only supported for Windows 7 Enterprise/Professional/Ultimate, and Windows 7 Home Basic/Premium and Starter are not supported. Besides, the dynamic disk is mainly used for huge storage while basic disks is better for ordinary data storage. For these reasons, many people opt to convert dynamic disk to basic one in Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7.
